Embracing the Power of Commitment: The Secret to Living a Legendary Life
In this article, we are going to delve into the topic of commitment, specifically commitment to oneself. If you aspire to live a legendary life, you must be willing to engage in the arduous yet meaningful work each and every day. It is through living as a legend on a daily basis that you truly live your life.
Commitment in Life’s Everyday Journey
Often, we perceive life as a linear timeline from birth to eventual demise, disregarding the experiences in between.
Is our existence merely a result of what we have accomplished? The reality is that we are reborn each morning, presented with a fresh opportunity to create, only to surrender that opportunity every night when we sleep. That is the nature of our existence. We navigate life one day at a time. Once you grasp the concept that your life, much like a day, represents a lifetime in itself, you begin to make significant progress.
It is when you start to seize each day and make the most of it that you truly savor your life, one day at a time. Attempting to live a year, a decade, a week, a month, or even a quarter at a time will only result in the swift passage of time, for our lives are measured in days.
In our lives, there are certain activities we engage in on a weekly basis. We ignite the fire and we create sparks. These daily practices ensure that we stay aligned, motivated, and empowered every single day. However, it’s easy to overlook the fact that our commitment to starting the fire and igniting the spark is not a commitment to me or any coach. It’s a commitment to ourselves.
Unifying Our Understanding of Commitment
Before delving into the commitment to oneself, a program, or anything else, let’s establish a shared understanding of what commitment truly means. What does commitment entail? When I first embarked on my personal growth journey, I attended a training similar to this one. During that session, one of my mentors, a remarkable individual, presented a definition of commitment. I was astounded, not by the specific definition provided, but by the realization that despite using the term frequently and engaging in conversations about it, I had never taken a moment to fully grasp its meaning, even at the age of 40.
I questioned how I had gone so long without pausing to consider whether my understanding of commitment aligned with that of the people around me. If our interpretations differed, the word itself held no significance. It is imperative for us to establish a unified definition of commitment. Without it, true commitment becomes unattainable.
We cannot embody the person we aspire to be if we lack a clear understanding of commitment. How can we dedicate ourselves if we haven’t comprehended its essence?
Defining Commitment
Commitment can be broken down into two key components. Firstly, it entails doing what is necessary. When we commit to something, it means we will fulfill the requirements to accomplish it. For instance, if my commitment is to slam-dunk a basketball, I will ensure that I rise above the rim and forcefully dunk the ball, with my hands positioned over the rim. The mechanics of the action dictate what is necessary.
Secondly, commitment involves fulfilling what you have stated you would do. If I have declared my intention to perform a reverse 180 dunk, a 360 dunk, or a dunk from the free-throw line, those additional elements become part of the commitment. When striving to lead a life of integrity, what we say holds significant weight.
So, what is the definition of commitment? It encompasses two aspects: performing what is required and fulfilling what you have stated on top of that. When you truly internalize this definition of commitment, you realize the importance of refraining from excessive speech. It means ceasing to make promises that go beyond what you are certain you can deliver. The most challenging aspect of commitment lies in keeping one’s word. Often, we become overconfident and make commitments we cannot uphold, leading to unmet obligations.
It is crucial to thoroughly understand what is genuinely required before making a commitment. As I have developed in terms of integrity, I have become more cautious about making significant commitments. I approach commitments with careful deliberation and make them slowly. What does it mean to be committed? It means doing what is necessary and fulfilling what you have pledged.
Upholding Our Commitments
Now, let’s explore the topic of commitment through an engaging clip. We’ll be discussing commitment after watching this enjoyable scene. Perhaps you recall it from the popular movie “Taken.
This scene is undoubtedly iconic, and I’m certain you all have seen it before. The remarkable aspect of this scene lies in the commitment displayed by the character. He understands precisely what is required and is fully determined to follow through on his words. The remainder of the movie showcases his unwavering dedication as he fulfills his commitment, even in the subsequent sequels.
However, let’s not mistake his declaration for a mere idle threat. He is not simply implying that he will take action. Instead, he is making a genuine commitment. He comprehends the gravity of the situation, with his daughter’s life hanging in the balance.
In our own lives, the stakes may not be as high as a loved one’s life, but every decision we make carries consequences. Every commitment we break jeopardizes our own lives. The more commitments we neglect, the easier it becomes to abandon commitment altogether, leaving us as individuals with no sense of dedication.
What does discipline entail? We will explore this topic in depth in a separate training session, but here’s a brief overview. Discipline is observing someone who has lived a committed life in the past. It is the manifestation of commitment in hindsight. Being committed means fulfilling both aspects: doing what you said you would do and doing what is required. This simple definition yields powerful results in your life when you take ownership of it.
Reflecting on Our Commitments
Consider a scenario where you made a commitment to lose weight but failed to achieve the desired outcome. Reflect on whether you did what was required and if you followed through on what you had declared. Typically, the answer will be no. If the answer is yes, something may have gone awry, such as making the wrong commitment to achieve the desired result. However, if the answer is no, as is often the case, there lies the problem—lack of commitment.
Today, we will engage in a thought-provoking conversation about commitment. I want you to recall an instance in your life where you fulfilled what was required but fell short of doing what you said you would do. For instance, perhaps you assured a customer that their order would arrive on time, but you failed to add the requested ribbon. Though it may seem trivial, such situations can tarnish your word and integrity as a person. Instead, you could have simply promised to deliver on time.
Furthermore, think of another occasion when you made a commitment but failed to meet the requirements. In those instances, you were ultimately not committed, as you did not fulfill both aspects. Once you have these examples in mind, have a meaningful conversation with your coach, as we will then explore your current commitments in areas such as fitness, faith, family, finance, and fun.
Embracing the Challenges of Commitment
When examining these commitments, ask yourself: Are you capable and willing to do what is required? Are you capable and willing to fulfill what you said you would do? Today’s discussion revolves around these questions, and embracing this conversation will propel you forward in your life.
If you aspire to live a legendary life, you must be willing to undertake the necessary and worthwhile work every single day. Starting today, let’s roll up our sleeves and get to work.
