You Can Be Anything, But You Can’t Be Everything
In life, we all have aspirations and desires to become something, to achieve our dreams and live the life we desire. However, as humans, we face a limitation that we cannot escape – we are just one person. This means we cannot be everything, despite having the ability to be anything.
It is easy to fall into the trap of trying to do everything we see or think we want to do. We get halfway down the road of creating the life we want and decide to add more and more things to it. While this might work for a while, we eventually realize that we cannot do everything, and trying to do so will limit our ability to become the best version of ourselves.
Social media exacerbates this problem by making us think that we need to be like everyone else. However, even if we wanted to, it is not possible because ultimately, we are just one person among the 8 billion people on the planet.
Leveraging the Power of “Anything”
Despite this limitation, we can leverage the power of being anything to our advantage. We have the ability to choose who we want to be and what we want to achieve. We can make decisions that will enable us to create the life we desire while acknowledging that we cannot do everything.
An example of this is a powerful exchange between Catwoman and Batman that speaks to a larger truth about life. In one particular scene, they are forced to confront the fact that they cannot be everything at once. Catwoman urges Batman to prioritize his own survival, reminding him that his life is worth more than the entire town or world he is trying to save. Batman, on the other hand, insists that he cannot abandon his duty and must choose to be the hero who stays and fights.
What’s fascinating about this scene is the clash of values and priorities between the two characters. Catwoman understands that being the person who survives means she cannot be the person who saves, while Batman’s sense of duty prevents him from running away. Neither of them is inherently right or wrong, but they must choose who they want to be and what they stand for. This dilemma is not limited to fictional superheroes. In life, we all face choices that force us to prioritize one thing over another.
What you don’t want is typically a guide towards what you want, but it’s not enough to just say what you don’t want. For instance, when you envision a happy marriage, you might say, you don’t want a certain negative thing, but ultimately you can’t create something that’s negative.
You can’t create ‘not sad’. You can’t create ‘not unhappy’. However, you can create happiness, connection, joy, and togetherness.
A Story of Choosing What You Want
Let’s talk about identifying what you don’t want. It’s not a glamorous topic, but it’s an essential part of making decisions and avoiding distractions that keep us from becoming our best selves. Coach Mark, a fitness coach and former fitness model, has an excellent example of this.
Mark had set a goal for himself to bench 500 pounds. It’s an impressive feat, and he was determined to achieve it. He started the grueling work required to lift that amount of weight, but after a few weeks, he realized something important. He didn’t actually want to lift 500 pounds. He wanted to look like he could lift 500 pounds.
This realization was a game-changer for Mark. He adjusted his training and focused on building the look he desired rather than trying to lift an enormous amount of weight. This shift in perspective allowed him to be more efficient in his training and avoid the dangers of lifting such heavy weights.
This example applies to other areas of life, too. Many people set a goal to “lose weight,” but that’s not really what they want. They want to feel better, look sexier, or fit into a certain size. The weight itself is just a number that can become a distraction.
By identifying what we don’t want, we can free ourselves from the pressure to achieve things that don’t align with our true desires. It allows us to focus on what we really want and create a training protocol that reflects that. So, take some time to think about what you don’t want, and use that information to create a plan that aligns with your true desires.
What Do You Not Want?
In life, it’s crucial to focus on what you don’t want. What are the things you need to get out of your mind? At one point in my life, I dreamed of becoming a professional athlete. It was a goal I had set for myself, and I chased it for many years. But eventually, I came to a realization that it was just not going to happen.
I let go of that dream, and it was liberating. Sure, I still love sports, but the reality is that being a professional athlete is just not in the cards for me. And that’s okay. By putting this goal aside, I freed myself up to pursue other things that actually align with my strengths and values.
What about you? Are you striving to become a web celebrity or an entrepreneur? Or are you content with working for a corporation? There’s no right or wrong answer, but it’s important to decide what you will or won’t do.
The Power of “Will” and “Won’t”
This brings us to the conversation of “can” and “can’t” versus “will” and “won’t.” Victim thinking revolves around “can” and “can’t” – thinking you either can or cannot do something. Creators, on the other hand, think in terms of “will” and “won’t.” They decide what they will do and what they won’t do. The power lies in the wording.
It’s important to acknowledge what you won’t want, what you have decided is not serving you. Many times, we may pursue something, and when we fail, we tend to blame ourselves. The truth is, we didn’t genuinely want it. We were just trying to convince ourselves that we did.
So, focus on what you don’t want, and make a conscious decision about what you will or won’t pursue. This will free you up to create the life that you truly desire.
Now, the question that I’m gonna ask each of you to answer is: What are the things that you won’t do that allow you to be the person that you demand to be?
Sure, there are things that you must do to become the best version of yourself. But, let’s face it, there are also things that you must avoid at all costs. These distractions can easily sway you off the path towards your goals.
Can you be anything you want? Definitely! but here’s the catch: you cannot be everything. You have to prioritize and make sacrifices to achieve your desired outcome.
So, what are those things that you refuse to do that allow you to stay true to yourself? Only you can answer that question. It’s time to evaluate your choices and identify the actions that don’t align with your values. It’s time to be edgy and take a stand for the person you demand to be.
